Aghios Nikolaos, a coastal town on a… lake

Aghios Nikolaos is the capital of the Lasithi province, built on the western side of the Gulf of Mirabello round the famous Voulismeni or Apatos lake. The town is a cosmopolitan tourist resort which has at maintained, to a great extent, its traditional color, especially around the lake.

Today the lake is surrounded by restaurants and modern tourist shops where a visitor can find almost anything.

The chapel of Aghios Nikolaos lies on port’s peninsula. This is where small boats set off to visit the islet of Spinalonga. The town is also connected to the Cyclades (Melos), Cassos, Carpathos, Cos, Rhodes and the port of Piraeus.

Aghios Nikolaos is an ideal base for excursions as it is situated 75 kilometers from Herakleion, 70 kilometers from Siteia and 36 kilometers from Ierapetra.
