LOCATION

White houses with a view to the deep blue of the Aegean, peace and beautiful sunsets unexplored beaches, hospitality and air of good mirth, constitute the image of the island that the visitor of Folegandros finds in search for something special for his holidays.

In Folegandros the locals do not need a specific reason to celebrate. Their temperament and individuality allow them to organize feast with live bands and traditional music in every chance. However, there are also religious celebrations as well as cultural events and open fairs that the visitor of Folegandros can attend and participate. The feast that you could not afford to lose though and definitely must participate is Easter's Celebration.

EASTER CELEBRATIONS

The celebration of Easter is the biggest religious festival of the island and attracts the interest of all the visitors that come exclusively for that. The ritual last for 5 days in absolute religious devoutness in which all the locals participate. Everything takes place during the Good Week and the interest is at its peak on Good Friday. The litany of Jeasus Epitaph starts from the church of Saint Nikolas in the main square Dounavis of Chora and after it has gone through all the little streets and alleys creating a beautiful image with the locals chanting holding candles, it reaches to pay their respects. It is worth noticing that the locals that do not follow litany of the Epitaph stand on their balconies throwing rose pedals and cologne on the Epitaph having their censers burning.

On Good Saturday, Resurrection evening, all the locals along with the visitors are gathered again outside the church of Saint Nicolas making the square look crowded. There they watch the peak of the Divine tragedy listening to the High Priest chanting and the bells ringing sadly. The scenery of sandiness changes of course after midnight with fireworks that light up the sky, bells ringing joyfully and wishes among the locals and of course the family dinner of Mageritsa which is the main dish for that evening.

What makes the celebration of Easter special in Folegandros is the litany of the icon of Virgin Mary which starts from the Easter Sunday and is completed on Tuesday. According to the tradition , the icon of Virgin Mary who is the islands protector, goes from one side to the other. The believers participating in the Litany go into the blessed houses in order to wish the hosts the best and take local food and sweets as well as a glass of Raki. On Sunday the icon goes around Chora on Monday on Ano  Meria and on Tuesday the litany ends at the port of Karavostasi.

FOLEGANDROS CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS

Going on with the events of the summer, we must mention the following. At first, during July cultural events called Folegandros Celebration take place in Folegandros . The program is full of different events every day which are free for the locals as well as the visitors of the island that period. NAUTICAL CLUB OF FOLEGANDROS

During August two main events take place on the 5^th with the popular feast of the Nautical Society of Folegandros and the other on the 14^th which is the eve of the Celebration of Virgin Mary, protector of the island. In the first event the participation in the last few years is remarkable and those who want to attend it are advised to get their invitations in advance. In the price, food, wine and lots of singing and dancing is included.

RELEGIOUS CELEBRATIONS

On July 27^th we celebrate the church of Saint Panteleimonas which is in Ano Meria with the participation of all the locals and is completed later in the evening with the sounds and treats of Raki and local sweets.

Finally, another event takes place in Septemer on the 14^th to celebrate the Holy Cross. Here it is a traditional for the "fairman" to treat people sweets, drinks and coffee and the ritual is of course more modest than the others since a feast does not follow. It is characteristic that the locals on that day prepare the traditional dish of chickpeas for lunch which is made according to the local traditional recipe.
